In the past three years, I have made two trips to Paris, France and have fallen in love with everything French. I absolutely love the city—I love the art, the shopping, and the beautiful architecture. But one of my favorite parts of french culture is this idea of dessert for breakfast. It is very typical for a parisian to grab a delicious pastry every morning on their way to work (of course, they walk the majority of their commute rather than stopping through the McDonald's drive through window for a sausage Mcmuffin). I fell in love with the corner bakery near our Parisian apartment for its almond croissants, chocolate croissants, and cafe au laits. During my time in the states, I have since been on the search for a french bakery that lives up to my expectations for an authentic croissant. My prayers were answered when I moved to Denver, Colorado and found this treasure right down the street from the university. Trompeau Bakery is the best french bakery I have had since Paris. The picture below is of an almond croissant and cafe latte at Trompeau. The owners scurry around every morning busily filling huge orders of baguettes or boxes of pastries, all the while speaking in French. Even the hours are very European (6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.). The baker wakes up every morning Monday-Saturday at 2:30 a.m to begin baking. The pastries are hottest at 6 a.m., but I have yet to make it there that early. This morning, they were even selling macaroons, which doesn't happen often so if you see them you should definitely indulge.
